- Arrange for your parents to meet your fiancé,
- Discuss about betrothal gifts,
- Select your wedding date (registration date can be different from the day of your banquet),
- Estimate budget,
- Select registration venue (Church or Marriage Registry),
- Decide on the style of wedding banquet (Chinese, Western, Outdoor, Sit-down, Cocktail),
- Compile guest list,
- Reserve a wedding venue,
4-6 months ahead
- Select wedding attendants (Best Man, Maid of Honour, Bridesmaids, Ushers, Flower Girls, Ringbearer, Banquet MCs),
- Book a church, arrange for prenuptial enquiry and rehearsal (some churches require books to be made up to 6 months in advance),
- Start skincare and keep-fit program,
- Buy or rent your wedding gown, evening gowns, qipao and accessories,
- Purchase wedding rings,
- Buy or rent groom’s attire,
- Decide on best man’s attire, and maid of honour and bridesmaids’ gowns,
- Purchase flower girl’s and ringbearer’s outfits,
- Take wedding portraits,
- Book photographer and videographer (discuss your preferences. For example, black & white or coloured photography, posed or candid shots, compilation of moments you deem important),
- Book a band or musician for ceremony and banquet,
- Design and order invitation cards, and other stationary such as reply cards and thank-you notes,
- Book a florist,
- Order Wedding favours,
- Notify friends and relatives abroad about your wedding,
- Reserve accommodations for out-of-town guests,
- Plan and book honeymoon,
- Schedule premarital body check-up,
- Signup for pre-marriage course or consultation,
- Buy girdle,
2-3 months ahead
- Obtain marriage license at marriage registry (you can make online booking 3 months and 14 days before your wedding date),
- Invite a priest/father to officiate the ceremony and discuss with him about your Church program. Check restrictions on church wedding (i.e. decoration, parking spaces, music arrangements, photography and videographer),
- Buy special lingerie and stockings that fit your gown,
- Prepare betrothal gifts and dowry,
- Purchase Western and Chinese cake coupons (get a discount at Wedding Fairs!),
- Order wedding cake,
- Order table wine,
- Confirm with florists venue decoration, car decoration, bridal bouquet, bridesmaid’s bouquet and flower girl’s basket, corsages and boutonnieres (see Wedding Flowers Chart),
- Book bridal car and arrange other transportation and parking spaces,
- Plan bridal shower and bachelor’s party,
- Schedule banquet meal tasting,
- First dress fitting if you are having it made,
1 month ahead
- Confirm bridal party list,
- Prepare detailed schedule and list out each attendant’s responsibilities for the day,
- Purchase gifts for bridal shower,
- Purchase items for Chinese ceremonies and other miscellaneous items (i.e. Dragon-Phoenix tea set, candy box, guestbook, pens, cigarettes, lai-see envelopes),
- Ensure the Church receives your marriage license 2 weeks in advance,
- Send invitations,
- Have final dress fitting (remember to bring shoes and lingerie you’re going to wear on your Wedding Day),
- Complete proper documents for change of name,
- Write toasts or speech for wedding banquet,
- Open safety box and joint account,
- Apply for annual leave,
- Record gifts received and write thank-you notes,
- Purchase car decorations if not prepared by florist.,
2 weeks ahead
- Confirm number of guests and arrange seating plan,
- Confirm all the service suppliers (Photographers, Videographer, Make-up Artist, Hair stylist, Florist etc.),
- Arrange for attendants’ to meet and discuss the schedule and their responsibilities for the day,
- Hold bridal shower or bachelor’s party,
1 week ahead
- Pick up tailor-made gowns,
- Pack for honeymoon,
- Confirm travel arrangements,
- Confirm number of guests and details with caterer,
- Order roasted pig for home-coming ritual,
- Assign a close friend/relative to take care of the bride’s personal belongings for the day,
- Arrange payments for banquet, door-opening lai-see, other lai-see and tips,
- Go through the rundown with close relatives and explain their respective roles,
- Have manicure, pedicure and hair removal 2 days in advance,
- Reserve table for bridal party lunch (if needed),
- Prepare amenity kits for emergency use (i.e. sewing kits, cotton buds, double-sided tape),
1 day ahead
- Pickup gowns and groom’s attire if rented,
- Pickup bouquets, boutonnieres, corsages and car decoration,
- Finalise seating chart,
- Remind photographer, videographer, makeup artist and hair dresser to arrive on time,
- Perform traditional Chinese hairdressing ritual,
- Relax and sleep tight!
